GP London specialises in fitting intrauterine contraception devices (IUS and IUDs), also known as a coil. Coils are a reliable and safe contraceptive for women of all ages that have no ongoing effect on fertility once removed.
After insertion, IUDs remain in place for 3 – 5 years (hormonal coils) and 5 – 10 years (copper coils). Our experts at GP London provide coil fitting and removal in Camden but will always first discuss your contraceptive needs.
We have two main types of contraceptive coils:
The copper coil is also called the intrauterine device or IUD. Both the Mirena and copper coils are made from plastics, but the Mirena is coated with hormones, while the copper is coated with copper.
Both devices are inserted in the uterus, and they protect against unwanted pregnancy for a long period. The Mirena coil works by releasing small amounts of the hormone progesterone, which can also be effective in preventing heavy periods.
The coil provides long-term protection against pregnancy but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
IUD is a small T-shaped copper and plastic device which a nurse or doctor inserts in the uterus. It releases copper to prevent conception and protect against pregnancy between 5 – 10 years.
The Mirena coil or IUS is also a small, T-shaped plastic device which a nurse or doctor inserts in the womb or uterus. This coil releases the hormone progesterone to prevent pregnancy for 3 – 5 years.
At GP London, our expert medical practitioners provide different family planning services, including Mirena coil fitting. You can contact us to book a same-day appointment.
Following your initial appointment and discussion with the doctor, we can fit your copper coil or IUD, Mirena coil or IUS immediately. Almost all of our patients leave the clinic on the same day with their coil successfully inserted.
