What is a contraceptive coil?

A contraceptive coil is a small T-shaped implant placed in the womb to prevent getting pregnant.

Two types of contraceptive coils are available. They include:

  • IUD or copper coil
  • IUS or hormonal coil (Kyleena or Mirena coil)

Intrauterine device (IUD)

An IUD, commonly called coil, is a long-term reversible contraceptive fitted above the cervix to prevent pregnancy. This small device stays in place until it requires replacement or you want to start giving birth or change your contraception entirely.

Features of an IUD

  • It is a T-shaped copper device
  • It lasts about 12 years, but you can remove it at anytime
  • It reduces the chances of accidental pregnancy
  • You can fit it at any point in your cycle
  • It doesn’t protect you from STIs

Intrauterine system (IUS)

The IUS is also a long-term, reversible contraceptive but differs from IUDs in its mode of protection. The IUS has an additional hormonal element that protects from unwanted pregnancy.

Features of IUS

  • It is a T-shaped or spherical device containing hormones that prevent accidental pregnancies
  • It lasts about five years, but you can remove the device at any time
  • It works immediately after insertion, and fitting is possible at any point during your cycle
  • It doesn’t protect you from STIs

Benefits of IUS/IUD coil

  • They are a long-term contraceptive option, so you can forget about the device after insertion and remain protected from pregnancy, unlike oral contraceptives you must take daily. An IUD can last for about ten years, while IUS lasts up to 5 years
  • Easy to remove and has no lasting effect on fertility
  • Safe to use while breastfeeding
  • IUS is a safe contraceptive for people sensitive to hormonal contraceptives
  • Some women experience reduced pain and discomfort during their periods

Contraceptive coil fitting

After your initial consultation with the gynaecologist, we will fit the copper or hormonal coil. Most patients get their coil on the same appointment. However, you may need to schedule a second appointment after your last period when the cervix is more flexible for the coil fitting. The procedure for fitting a coil takes about five minutes.

We can perform a pelvic ultrasound scan to assess the condition of your uterus and identify where to fit the device. Coil fitting is through the vagina and cervix, and then you will have a follow-up ultrasound to ensure your coil is in the right position. The healthcare provider will trim the thread of the coil at your cervix.

We will apply an anaesthetic gel to ensure your coil fitting is comfortable. If necessary, you will get extra pain relief.

Contraceptive coil removal

You can remove your coil at any time. If you want to insert another coil and aren’t ready to conceive, ensure you use additional contraception for seven days before the coil removal. You can get pregnant immediately after you remove the IUD.

Contraceptive coil Fitting FAQs

Coil fitting is usually uncomfortable, but the procedure isn’t painful. To reduce discomfort, the healthcare provider may apply local anaesthesia to the cervix before the coil insertion.

Coils specifically for women who haven’t had a baby are available. You can get the Kyleena coil if you haven’t had a baby.

You can use an IUD as an emergency contraceptive, but inserting the IUD should be done within 5 – 8 days after unprotected sex.

Some women with an IUD have heavier periods than normal in the initial period.

You will not feel the IUD during sex, and neither will your partner. If you feel the IUD, ensure you schedule a follow-up appointment.

The IUD can last between 5 – 10 years before requiring a replacement.
